Makadara member of parliament was thrown out of parliament because of inappropriate dress code. The question is, Should parliament dictate how people dress?
One thing is for sure, If I was from Makadara, I won’t have voted for Sonko. However, I respect the voters and Soko as a person. That said, The parliament does not have the right to dictate fashion, preference, taste or desires on Kenyans. Kenyans own the right to choose what to consume. The heritage MP normally goes to parliament dressed in Maaasai attire. That includes all sorts of ornaments.
The Maasai wear ear rings and ear studs, bangles and necklaces. They dress in colorful shukas looking like beautiful female wedding gowns yet they are warriors! Somalis go around with long white (dresses), Muslims and many Christians too.
Among the Maasai, women shave clean their heads while warriors keep rasta. That is called culture. Sonko maybe just passionate to ear studs as a bling-bling as a touch of his fashion and wealth. How he acquired that wealth is another case. Kikuyu had bling-bling too and Sonko is a Kiuk isn’t he?
Don’t you think the Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim move to throw Sonko out was unconstitutional? Every individual has the right to associate themselves to whatever cultural and grow in it as long as it is not harmful to any other individual. This time around, Sonko did not harm anyone by wearing what some MPs called women wear. Comeon…
