This demand led to acquisition of The Philippines Island, the Puerto Rico and also annexes Hawaii in 1898. The European Spain was chased out of Cuba during that “splendid little war of 1898“ in order to perfect the hegemony of the United States over the New World as a whole.
After its defeat by the American Navy in May 1, 1898, Spain was made to abandon all sovereignty over Cuba, Puerto Rico as well as yield the Philippines and Guam to the USA for twenty million dollars.
The expansion based on so called national interests and also veiled in moral and idealistic motives with a perception of reality colored by deterministic ideas about destiny with the argument raging from culture and religion to racial consideration.
